Warnings

Talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist before taking Nexium 24HR 20mg.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Nexium (esomeprazole) for the treatment of heartburn, acid reflux, and other acid-related conditions. In addition, the drug is being evaluated for its efficacy against esomeprazole. A recent review in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2023 found that up to a third of patients who take Nexium (esomeprazole) for more than four months will require long-term reflux treatment. In addition to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and esomeprazole, there is a significant increased risk of heartburn and other acid-related conditions from taking Nexium.

While some patients may not tolerate the drug, these concerns are not limited to the treatment of acid reflux and GERD. Other conditions that have been found to be more effective with Nexium include:

Acute acid-related conditions

Acute acid reflux is a condition where the stomach becomes inflamed and can cause discomfort or pain. This is known as acute acid reflux and occurs when acid reflux from the esophagus starts to accumulate. The condition is characterized by the symptoms of acid reflux:

  • Pain and burning when the stomach is full
  • Coughing
  • Swelling in the throat and esophagus

Acute acid reflux and other acid-related conditions are typically treated with over-the-counter (OTC) medications that contain proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These PPIs are called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs include:

  • Nexium (esomeprazole), a brand name for the drug esomeprazole, is a prescription medicine used to treat acid reflux, a condition in which the stomach becomes inflamed and can cause discomfort or pain.
  • PPIs may also be used with other medications for other conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and GERD-related conditions. The FDA has approved these medications to treat GERD and other conditions that may be associated with PPIs.

The FDA is also developing new formulations of PPIs to be available over the counter to consumers who are new to PPIs.

In September 2023, the FDA approved two new formulations of PPIs: Nexium 24HR (esomeprazole extended-release) and Nexium 20HR (esomeprazole extended-release). The two new formulations are intended to replace Nexium and be taken as a daily pill. The new formulations of Nexium and Nexium 20HR can be ordered through telemedicine, but they are not available over the counter. Nexium 24HR and Nexium 20HR are available OTC.

What is PPIs and the use of PPIs?

PPIs are a type of medication that are used to treat a condition that affects the acid or stomach in your body. They are also used to help treat the symptoms of GERD and other acid-related conditions.

Some of the symptoms of GERD include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Dizziness
  • Increased heart rate
  • Pain in the lower belly

PPIs are also used to help treat the symptoms of GERD. They are taken orally and taken every day for as long as it is needed.

What are the side effects of PPIs?

Directions for Use

How much to take• The recommended dose is one tablet a day. • Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don’t feel an improvement immediately. • You may need to take the tablets for 2 or 3 days in a row before your reflux symptoms (for example, heartburn and acid regurgitation) get better. • The treatment length is up to 14 days. • When your reflux symptoms have completely gone you should stop taking this medicine. • If your reflux symptoms get worse or do not improve after taking this medicine for 14 days in a row, you should consult a doctor. Do not use any other liquids. • Stir until the tablet breaks up (the mixture will not be clear) then drink the mixture straight away or within 30 minutes.
